Our vision
Is a Sophiatown and surrounding communities
where all people truly belong: where there is healing, opportunity and
prosperity; so that resources are used to create a society where none live in
poverty
Our values
Are inspired by the life-long service of Fr Huddleston to the recognition of every person’s intrinsic and equal value: we aim to operate with integrity, a focus on service, we value innovation and respect diversity

This is what happened on the 27th May
The children learned about some famous people from
Sophiatown as we continued with our journey through the history of Sophiatown
and the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre. They already learned about the Oak Tree
and the meetings that took place there. They could recognise the newspaper doll
of Trevor Huddleston as the same person from the pictures at the centre. They
learned that Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a friend and played an important role
in the community. Hugh Masekela’s trumpet was a hit and they felt proud that he
was so famous and a friend of Trevor Huddleston. They listened to some of his
music and could also identify the trumpet. The famous painting of the yellow
houses of Sophiatown by Gerard Sekoto further linked them to the past. However,
their main task was to tell their story by decorating their little person. They
are shaping Sophiatown as much as Sophiatown is shaping their stories
About Father Trevor Huddleston
We
are all about people: connecting and working together to make a better
South Africa. Here's a story about Fr Huddleston’s commitment to the
development of young people that inspires us.
Fr
Trevor Huddleston, concerned that a 14 year old Hugh Masekela was not
fulfilling his potential at St Peter’s School, bought a second hand trumpet at
Hugh’s request. Fr Huddleston was then inundated with requests, including
from Jonas Gwangwa. Having secured a trombone for Jonas, and other
instruments, they formed the Huddleston Jazz Band in 1955. When Huddleston was
exiled from South Africa he travelled to the US where he met Louis Armstrong
and told him about ‘his’ band – to which Armstrong then donated a new trumpet
for Hugh.
As
we know Hugh went on to be perhaps South Africa’s most internationally famous
band leader, trumpeter and jazz pioneer. At the memorial service for Fr
Huddleston, held at the Market Theatre, Joburg in 1998 Hugh Masekela presented
a young trumpeter with a brand new trumpet in Huddleston’s name. In
Sophiatown today we support emerging talent – music, dance, art, design,
theatre and photography to name a few of the disciplines. But at the
heart of it is the music.

2015: November, Sophiatown: Fr Huddleston’s 1955 Isithwalandwe Medal comes home to South Africa
Mrs Mbeki joined THMC founding Patron, Archbishop Thabo
Makgoba to receive the original Isithwalandwe medal, which travelled from the
UK based Community of the Resurrection (CR) – Fr Huddleston’s religious order –
to the Fr Huddleston Memorial Centre, in Sophiatown. Here work continues
to enable young South African’s to develop their full potential, following in
the footsteps of hundreds of youngsters who were schooled and supported by Fr
Trevor and his colleagues and brothers working across Soweto and the historic
western area neighbourhoods close to historic Sophiatown.
